Name
Along with over 300 other populated places and physical features in Canada, it
is named after Queen Victoria (1819-1901).
Victoria is one of those unique cities seemingly destined to be a haven for travelers. Breathtakingly picturesque, and imbued with a flavor and style born of its British heritage, the city sits on the southeast tip of 300-mile long Vancouver Island just off the west coast of Canada facing the Juan de Fuca Strait and it's neighbor to the south, the United States.
Across Haro Strait to the east are the picturesque San Juan Islands of Washington State. To the northeast are the equally beautiful Canadian Gulf Islands, and beyond them, across the Strait of Georgia, is the stunningly beautiful and dynamic city of Vancouver, British Columbia and the mainland of Canada.
This proximity to the cities of Vancouver, British Columbia and Seattle, Washington, as well as its abundant and various attractions, assures Victoria of a steady stream of visitors flocking to the island for day trips, weekend get-a-ways, week-long vacations and other extended stays. Today, Victoria is a city boasting a population of 350,000 and plays host to more then 3.5-million visitors a year.
Victoria seems to have something to offer for everyone: wilderness adventure in the mountains and forests of Vancouver Island; cruising, whale watching, kayaking or fishing in the surrounding waterways; quaint shops; boutiques and exclusive stores; museums, culture and historic tours; opera, symphony and theatre; and a variety of eateries and accommodations to suit the tastes and needs of most any traveler.
