North Vancouver is often mistaken as the north end of the City of Vancouver. In fact, North Vancouver is a separate municipality spanning approximately 5 square miles. Located on the picturesque Burrard Inlet, North Vancouver is said to mark the spot where Captain George Vancouver first made contact with the First Nations during his arrival to the area in 1792. Now a prime residential and commercial area, North Vancouver prides itself on its beauty and the bounty of parks that adorn its shores. Nearby activities include skiing, snowboarding and hiking at Whistler and Grouse Mountains and sightseeing in the nearby town of Horseshoe Bay (the ferry terminal for the Sunshine Coast).

Attractions include the Lonsdale Quay and Markets, which overlooks the Inlet at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue. With more than 60 local vendors, it is a favorite location for cappuccino and early morning shopping. A 15-minute seabus ride shuttles pedestrians between downtown Vancouver and the Quay, providing a comfortable and scenic way to avoid bridge traffic. It's also an easy way to hop around the Vancouver area using the connecting bus lines.

North Vancouver's Waterfront Park, in the 200 block of West Esplanade, offers a relaxing setting with several cultural attractions to enjoy. Chiba Gardens commemorates the friendship of two cities: North Vancouver and Chiba, Japan. Nearby, the TransCanada Trail Pavilion marks the North Vancouver entrance to the 11,187.5-mile TransCanada trail, which spans the length of the country from west to east coast.

Accommodations and dining amenities in North Vancouver can match just about any pocketbook or preference. Summertime is the ideal season in which to visit the Vancouver Mainland, although reservations are usually recommended.
