Location
Located in the geographical center
of the state of Idaho, in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Challis
is surrounded by Salmon National Forest and Challis National Forest.
Getting
to Challis
 Main routes into town are US 93 from the north and
southeast, and ID 75 from the southwest. Part of US 93 and ID 75 are on the Salmon River Scenic Byway.
Closest Interstates are I-15 to the east, and I-84 south.
Main
Industries
Cattle ranching, molybdenum (a hardening agent for steel) mining,
government (U.S. land management agencies), farming (hay, seed potatoes),
tourism.

Welcome
to Historic Challis.
Named after Alvah P. Challis, the town began in 1878 as a supply
center for the remote mining camps of the Yankee Fork, Bayhorse, and
Clayton.
