Although recently the fastest growing city in the Wood River Valley, Hailey is a more sedate community than her northerly neighbors. Hailey is where you will find the majority of the hard working people who keep the tourist economy of Ketchum and Sun Valley alive.
History
Founded in 1881, Hailey was a big beneficiary of the1880s mining boom. In
1883 the community got Idaho's first telephone exchange, and in 1889 it
installed the state's first electric light system. Resident movie star Bruce
Willis invested in the downtown area in an attempt to bring more
entertainment facilities to the town.
Name
Named for John Hailey, who laid out the town in 1881. He had made his
fortune in the Boise Basin Gold Rush twenty years earlier and had invested
his earnings in a stage and freight line.
