Ketchum
Ranger District Complex, First Street and Washington Avenue,
Ketchum. The historic building complex once belonged to the Sawtooth
National Forest. It's assortment of buildings included a ranger
station, maintenance building, warehouses and living quarters built by the
Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1933 Depression. Today it
houses the City of Ketchum's Heritage & Ski Museum, which preserves 25
collections, including: early wooden skis used in the valley prior to
1935; the 1930-1993 Gretchen and Don Fraser Collection; and early Sun
Valley photographs and oral histories of the development of skiing in the
American West.
Notable
People
Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961)
Author, Ernest "Papa" Hemingway was the most notable of Ketchum's residents. He finished For
Whom the Bell Tolls in Suite 206 of the Sun Valley
Lodge. Twenty
years later, having won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction and a Nobel Prize for
Literature, Hemmingway fled from Cuba upon Fidel Castro’s takeover, and
returned to Ketchum. The graves of Ernest and fourth wife Mary are in the little cemetery in Ketchum.
There is a memorial to him near the
Sun Valley Golf Course beside Trail Creek, one of his favorite fly-fishing
streams. His last residence, not open to the public and donated by
Mary to the Nature Conservancy, is also the place where he committed suicide with a
shotgun. The house lies in the Sawtooth Mountains
just north of Sun Valley. Take ID-75 north, and just before Saddle Road look
left. His home is just north of the Presbyterian Church.
