The Great Falls of the
Missouri River, from which the city gets it's name, is still impressive even
after a dam was built just above the falls.
Great Falls is proof that even
Montana’s mountainless prairies have gems to experience. Situated
approximately an hour east of the Rocky Mountains, the beauty of Great Falls
is sometimes overlooked by visitors on their way to skiing and hiking. The
Upper Missouri River runs through the town, and nearby waterfalls, which
were discovered by Lewis and Clark in 1805, give it its name.
Unlike many Western pioneer towns that
evolved from the fits and starts of gold rush exploration and ranching,
Great Falls is touted as architecturally planned city. Founded in the 1880s
by two entrepreneurs, the city was meticulously planned out before its first
residences were established. Great Falls’ early history can be seen in the
carefully designed thoroughfares, parks and historic buildings that populate
the city. Navigating the streets, as well as locating accommodations such as
hotels, motels and
bed and breakfasts is therefore easy in
Great Falls. There is also a wide range of dining
facilities within easy reach.
Attractions
in Great Falls include the Charles Russell Museum, which feature some of the
2,500 drawings and paintings of the 19th century artist who is called
“America’s Cowboy Artist;” the interactive Children’s Museum of Montana; the
Mansfield Center for Performing Arts and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive
Center. The Malmstrom Air Force Base Museum reflects the Air Force’s long
history in this part of North Central Montana.
Home to the minor league White Sox, Great
Falls has a numerous activities to enjoy
throughout the year. In addition to home games at Legion Park, there is
golf, a city tour and several parks and trails to enjoy.
Glacier National Park
and the ski areas of
Montana’s Rockies are an easy drive from Great Falls.
