The City of Newport, which sits almost exactly at the center of Oregon's scenic coastline, is known as the Dungeness crab capitol of the world.
Sports fishing is a major topic of conversation in Newport, which serves as the home base for one of the largest commercial fishing fleets in Oregon. Sports fishermen come here to try their hand at fishing for everything from salmon and halibut to crab and clams. There are specific regulations that govern the bag limits of certain shellfish and licenses are required for certain types of fishing.
The city's annual Seafest is touted as its most popular attraction. The festival's draw is not hard to understand considering the enormous number of sports fishing and marine enthusiasts that frequent Newport's Yaquina Bay area. The weekend event, which takes place at the end of June, features exhibits, tours and presentations on just about anything marine related.
Other top attractions in the area include the Oregon Coast Aquarium, which features educational presentations, exhibits and shows about Oregon Coast marine life, and the area's two lighthouses, Yaquina Head and Yaquina Bay Lighthouse.
Downtown Bay Boulevard comprises some of the city's most popular city attractions. Undersea exhibits, a wax museum, gift shops, restaurants, hotels and resort facilities overlook Newport's picturesque Yaquina Bay on the south side of the city.
Outdoor activities in the Newport area include beachcombing, camping, hiking and surfing. South Beach State Park and Agate Beach are both popular with both beginning and experienced surfers.
Newport is located at the junction of Highway 101 and Highway 20, adjacent to Corvallis and Albany. Commercial flights service the area at the Eugene airport, approximately 94 miles southeast of Newport.
