Winchester Bay, Oregon, situated at the mouth of the Umpqua River on Oregon's Central Coast is an off-roader's paradise. Nestled at the base of rolling sand dunes and picturesque conifer forests, Winchester Bay is a favorite destination for dune buggy enthusiasts. Several state-run off-road areas lie west and south of the town. Their entry points are easily accessible by paved and gravel roads.
The town also is known for the area's excellent fresh and saltwater fishing. Numerous rivers, creeks and lakes dot the area and are popular fishing haunts for sturgeon, Coho, Chinook and Steelhead salmon. Fishing guides for both river and ocean fishing can be found at Winchester Bay and the neighboring town of Reedsport.
Scenic drives in the area include the Umpqua Lighthouse loop, which links Winchester Bay's Salmon Harbor and the century-old Umpqua Lighthouse, one of the few beacons of its kind still in operation.
The area is also home to the Umpqua River Whale Watching Station, where visitors can observe migrating whales during the spring and winter months.
Winchester Bay's popularity as a recreational destination is celebrated with several popular festivals during the year: The Ocean Fest, which takes place in July, the Old Time Fiddler's Contest in August and the Art By the Bay Festival on Labor Day weekend.
