The facility is operated by the
University of Oregon Physics Department. A group of amateur
astronomers,
Friends of Pine Mountain Observatory help to operate the summer
visitors season and visits classrooms during the school year as part of
the Observatory's outreach program.

Over 50,000 acres of lakes, lava flows, and spectacular geologic features in central Oregon. The highest point within the Monument is the summit Paulina Peak (7,985 ft.), showcasing views of the Oregon Cascades and across the High Desert. The summit area of Newberry Volcano holds two alpine lakes full of trout and salmon, Paulina Lake (the state record brown trout was caught here weighing in at 27 pounds in 1993) and East Lake. Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway
Begin in Bend, Sunriver or LaPine and strike out on a breathtaking
87-mile loop that leads past Mt. Bachelor and the alpine lakes of
Central Oregon, with spectacular panoramas and inviting stops along the
way. Length: 66.0 mi / 106.2 km. Time to Allow: Three to five hours.
Oregon Outback Scenic Byway
Starting at La Pine this 171 mile drive takes you through the solitude
of the colorful desert. Allow 4-6 hours.

La Pine State Park is home to Oregon's largest ponderosa pine. The 500-year-old tree lives close to the Deschutes River in a shady grove of pines, which look puny in comparison. "Big Red" is about 190 feet tall and 325 inches in circumference. Big Tree

Nearby Fort Rock Cave is the site of an archaeological discovery of several 9,000 to 13,000 year-old sagebrush sandals. Fort Rock Cave is a National Heritage site and is open only by a state park guided tour.
