Description
Seattle is one of the three main "gateway"
cities to the Pacific Northwest (the others being Vancouver B.C. and Portland), as it is a
commercial, cultural and transportation hub for the region. Seattle offers a full range of
arts, cultural and sporting events, and an abundance of shops
and restaurants, although don't expect the level of
energy of a city like New York. The attraction of Seattle lies in its easy access to
outdoor recreational activities throughout the year. Use Seattle as a base from which to
explore the Cascade Mountains, including Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, North Cascades National Park,
the Olympic Mountains, the San Juan Islands, as
well as to hop over the border to Canada. Read

 Location
Seattle lies 113 miles (182 km) south of the
US-Canadian border on the western edge of the continent. The waters that lap the
feet of Seattle’s city towers, however, are not strictly those of the Pacific Ocean.
For in-between Seattle and the great ocean lies the Olympic Peninsula.
Seattle is on the hourglass-shaped land squished between the waters of Puget Sound and
Lake Washington. Downtown overlooks the Elliot Bay portion of the Sound. Beyond
these waters, Seattle is flanked by two major mountain ranges; the Cascade Mountains to
the east, and the Olympic Mountains dominating the skyline to the west.
The combination of surrounding water and
mountains provides stunning views from many vantage points throughout Seattle. The
awesome height of Mount Rainier is truly appreciated when seen from within the city, as it
puts skyscrapers to shame from 200 miles away.
