McCall, Idaho began in the late 1800s as a small logging community in the lush forests of mid-western Idaho. Today it is considered one of Idaho’s most popular recreation destinations. Its small-town atmosphere, combined with excellent skiing and snowboarding facilities has made this former ranch town a national vacation destination.
Nestled in the mountain ranges of Southwest Idaho, two hours north of Boise, McCall is surrounded by premier ski areas. All three resorts cater to snowboarders and have summit elevations of 7,000 feet or higher. Tubing, Nordic skiing, sleigh rides and ice skating are also favorite New Year activities in and around McCall.
McCall’s Winter Carnival, which takes place in late January-early February is a magnet for both winter sports enthusiasts and artists alike. Snow sculpture competitions, tubing races and McCall’s signature but wacky snowshoe golf are a few of the attractions at this offbeat 10-day festival.
Summer activities are just as plentiful in this year-round resort town. Situated on the shores of Payette Lake, McCall is within easy access of a wide range of sports, ranging from boating and water skiing to backcountry hiking and horseback riding.
For those who enjoy testing the rapids, McCall is within a day’s drive of several excellent river rafting locations. Both the Snake and the Salmon Rivers are known for their class III-IV rapids, although there are some locations on both rivers that are suitable for those who enjoy a gentler rafting experience.
Camping is available in several RV-camping parks as well as in the Payette National Forest. The Ponderosa State Park also has camping sites with RV hookups just east of Payette Lake.
