Polson,
Montana’s popularity is, in part, derived from its proximity to
Flathead Lake. Nestled at
the south end of this 192-square-mile lake, Polson commands sweeping
views of the Mission Mountains and surrounding countryside. The town’s
location at the southern tip of Flathead Lake makes this small
agricultural hub the perfect setting for a variety of recreational
pursuits.
The Flathead River,
which runs through Polson, is a popular whitewater-rafting location.
Numerous rafting companies operate on this class II-III river, which can
be accessed right in town.
The Kerr Dam features
a boardwalk and spectacular views of the 204-foot-high dam and
waterfall. There is also a boat launch for private vessels.
Wildlife viewing is
available at any number of nearby parks and wildlife areas. Elk, deer,
antelope and bison abound at the nearby National Bison Range. The Pablo
Wildlife Refuge is an excellent location to view Montana’s abundant
waterfowl, such as geese, ruddy ducks, mallards, loons, trumpeter swans
and American widgeon.
Attractions in Polson
include the Polson-Flathead Historical Museum, which offers a glimpse
into the area’s agricultural and marine history and the Miracle of
America Museum, which is devoted to American culture and history.
Polson is also the
site of Montana’s largest fiddling contest. Jam sessions can be found
all over town during the summer festival.
Other popular events
in Polson include its annual cherry festival in May, showcasing one of
the valley’s most popular agricultural products. The cherry orchards in
and around Polson provide an excellent venue for scenic driving tours.
The Flathead Valley
lends itself well to golfing and golf tournaments. The Polson Bay Golf
Club, which hosts the Gimme Golf tournament in June, and the Silver Fox
Golf Facility (in nearby Pablo), are both open to the public.
