Big Sky, Montana’s world-wide notoriety can be summed up with one word: Skiing. With an elevation of 6,200 feet and more than 5,300 acres of combined skiable terrain, Big Sky is considered the premier winter recreation area in South Central Montana. Home to two resorts, Big Sky is frequented by skiers and snowboarders of all levels of expertise. The brainchild of the NBC newscaster, Chet Huntley, Big Sky Resort was opened to the public in the 1970s. Excellent snow conditions (more than 375 inches of snow a year) and a vertical drop of 4,350 feet quickly made Lone Peak a preferred destination. Moonlight Basin Resort, which opened in the 1990s, has benefited from that fame as well as the area’s increasing notoriety as a summer vacation destination. Now considered a prime golfing area, Big Sky attracts visitors year round with its moderate summers and dry winters. The town’s proximity to Yellowstone National Park (less than an hour away) makes it an ideal base for many fishing, horseback and hiking expeditions. Local historical attractions include Karst’s Camp, a ghost town dating back to the early 1900s and the site of one of Montana’s earliest commercial ski ventures. Although the ski tow is long gone, visitors can still see the original cabins that were built for this purpose and explore a trail of an old mine. The Historic Crail Ranch is a National Heritage site that marks the homestead of turn-of-the-century pioneers. Big Sky is located on Highway 191,
approximately an hour’s drive south of the Gallatin Field Airport in
Bozeman and is an easy drive from Interstate 90. The town of 1,200 has
no lack of visitor amenities: it has more than 20 restaurants and
numerous hotels, guest ranches,
vacation homes and inns to choose from
year round.
