Gardiner may be one of the smallest gateway towns in Montana, but its link with Yellowstone National Park is indisputable. Separated from the 3,472 square-mile park by the massive stone entranceway that marks the park's North Gate, the town of 851 residents has served as an informal receiving point since 1880. Located just five miles from Mammoth Hot Springs and surrounded by resorts, hotels and campgrounds, Gardiner sees a steady flow of Yellowstone visitors throughout the year.

The Gardiner area has a wide selection of accommodations, including bed and breakfasts, motels, cabins, ranches, vacation rentals and camping facilities.

Dining possibilities range from pizza to steak in Gardiner. Yellowstone has additional dining amenities scattered within a reasonable drive from the park's North Gate entrance.

Situated on the Yellowstone River, Gardiner is within easy reach of several popular rafting launch points. The Class II/III river offers easy float trips through famously scenic countryside. The Gallatin River, northwest of Gardiner, is a Class I-IV river with varying technical difficulty and views of the Gallatin National Forest and nearby canyon countryside. Gardiner itself serves as a home port for a wide variety of recreational guide companies that specialize in everything from mountain bike to fly fishing expeditions.

Wildlife can often be seen on the outskirts of the town (and sometimes within!) Black and grizzly bears, elk, and buffalo frequent the Yellowstone area, as do osprey and bald eagles. Visitors are encouraged to keep their distance from wild animals and to refrain from feeding them.
