Red Lodge,
(el. 5,555 ft.), is located on the famous Beartooth Highway, approximately
70 miles from the Northeast entrance of
Yellowstone National
Park. A former coal mining town, Red Lodge is best known for the skiing
and snowboarding opportunities afforded on Red Lodge Mountain and in nearby
forests. Surrounded by the Custer and Gallatin National Forests, the town of
Red Lodge offers easy access to some of the best backcountry recreation in
South Central
Montana. Red Lodge is located just north of Beartooth Pass, a 45-mile tour through some of North America’s most spectacular scenery. The pass, which is only open four and a half months a year, rises to an elevation of almost 11,000 feet and escorts the traveler past alpine lakes, stunning canyon vistas and expansive forests. The southern tip of the pass crosses into Wyoming before concluding at the northeast corner of Yellowstone National Park. Numerous hiking trails can be accessed from this national byway. Red Lodge is also famous for its historical attractions, which include its downtown quarter of Romanesque, Gothic, Classical Revival and Colonial Revival architecture. Much of the city’s downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and can be viewed on a self-guided walking tour. Festivals are a high point in Red Lodge. The Festival of Nations, which takes place each August, recognizes the city’s broad multi-cultural origins. Music festivals fill the rest of the summer months. In March, the city is home to the national ski-joring finals, an off-beat western-style ski competition that blends horseback riding and gutsy slalom races into a unique sport. Considered the restaurant capital of Montana, Red Lodge features numerous hotels, motels, resorts and inns and is near Cooney State Park with 75 campsites and excellent boating and fishing opportunities.
