Deer Lodge, Montana owes its name to
Native American history. Once home to ancient geothermal springs, the area
became known as the place where deer could be found during the cold Montana
winters. The thermal springs are no longer visible as they have been paved
over by another one of the city's famous landmarks: The Montana State
Prison. Located at the center of the southwest region of Montana, Deer Lodge sits within easy reach of several local attractions. The Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site is situated at the northern edge of town and is a major destination during the spring and summer months. Originally the home of one of the country's 'cattle barons,'the ranch now serves as an interpretive center for Old West history. The Old Montana Prison, now a museum, was home to at least one of Butch Cassidy's 'Wild Bunch. The prison is now maintained as an historic landmark and is part of a series of unique museums in Deer Lodge that include exhibits on frontier history, law enforcement and Montana culture. The remains of several gold rush ghost towns can still be found in and around the Deer Lodge area. Garnet State Park commemorates an old mining town, and is best accessible during summer months. The Deer Lodge Valley is famous for its many bird species. More than 150 species of birds have been sighted in and around the Grant-Kohrs Ranch area. Local organizations regularly offer birding hikes and interpretive tours in the valley. The Deer Lodge Valley is an ideal location for camping. Federal, state and private campgrounds abound, providing an opportunity to experience Montana's scenery at its best. For those who prefer to stay in town, Deer Lodge has a comfortable selection of motels in the downtown area.
