Oregon Coast Travel Region
Rockaway Beach, Oregon
List with Go Northwest!
Rockaway Beach sits at the northern end of the
Oregon
Coast, surrounded by some of the state’s most coveted shoreline. This sleepy
vacation destination has become known for its miles of sandy beaches and
carefully maintained state parks, which draw thousands of summer visitors
each year.
Like its neighbor,
Manzanita, its fame comes from
what it doesn’t have – namely, congestion, overdevelopment and massive
stores. Rockaway Beach’s quiet atmosphere is complemented by an ample supply
of motels, inns
and vacation rentals. Gift
shops and other treasure troves are salted in
among a small selection of coffee houses and
restaurants.
Nearby attractions include the city of
Tillamook (south of Rockaway),
with its two cheese factories and the Tillamook Air Museum. Several wine
shops feature local wines and offer complementary tastings.
The Heisler Steam locomotive provides an entertaining
tour of the nearby coastline and runs from Garibaldi (located between
Rockaway and Tillamook) and Rockaway Beach. Riders can jump aboard in
Garibaldi, in front of Lumbermen’s Park. Reservations are advised.
Rockaway Beach also features a number of festivals and
art exhibits throughout the year. Most take place at the town’s wayside, and
a list of events can be obtained from the information center at the Little
Red Caboose, located at the wayside.
Steam
Rockaway Beach can be reached from
Portland via Highways 66 and
53, and from other coastal cities via U.S. Highway 101.
