Willamette Valley
The city of Ashland is located at the southern tip of Oregon's teeming Rogue Valley, approximately 15 miles north of California. Bounded on the west by the Siskiyou and Coast Range mountains and on the east by the Cascades, the city is famous for its warm summers and mild winters. Its close proximity to Mount Ashland offers excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities.
Best known for its Shakespeare Festival, which runs between February and October, Ashland advertises a year-round calendar of theatrical and musical attractions. The Tony-award-winning Shakespeare Festival is the oldest non-profit theater of its kind in the nation and showcases both theatrical presentations and educational events. Ashland is a boon for other theatrical arts as well, ranging from cabaret performances to repertory productions.
More than 25 art galleries are home to Ashland. Art walks featuring 2- and 3-dimentional art take place the first Friday of the month and are a great way to learn about the region's many artists.
Not surprisingly, many travelers flock to Ashland just to enjoy its restaurants. The "Taste of Ashland" festival, which takes place each April, highlights award-winning restaurants and wineries from around the region. Shopping opportunities are also popular and include a wide range of craft and specialty stores.
With its warm climate, it isn't hard to find recreational activities in and around Ashland. Hiking and boating at Crater Lake National Park is less than a two-hour drive from Ashland. The Rogue River, which is world-famous for river rafting, is even closer, and the Applegate Valley, which is known for its idyllic scenery, parks and roadside produce stands offers a great way to see some of Southern Oregon's beauty at its finest.
