The
town of Coulee Dam sprang up to accommodate those who worked on the
construction of Grand Coulee Dam.
The original town sections
are known as "Engineer's Town" or "Government Camp" on
the east side, and "Mason City" on the west side. This "temporary" 1930s engineering design continues to house
residents in quaint rows of small, neat cottages. Likewise, the City
Hall is in what was originally the Federal Administration building,
which housed offices for engineering and project administration.
A
self-guided Historical Walking Tour, beginning at the Visitor
Arrival Center, reveals the stories of the town's origins, and explains
some of the landmarks peculiar to its history. Notable is the Sand
Pile, which is the size of a small hill. This sand, "leftover"
from the production of concrete, can't be missed from the town's various
vantage points, such as Crown Point lookout.
