Location
Grand Coulee Dam is located about where the basaltic Columbia to the south and west meets the Okanogan Highlands to the north and east.  Hence, granite and not basalt is what you see in the immediate area.  Franklin D Roosevelt Lake, the water that builds up behind the dam, extends to the northeast.

Nearby Communities
There are three towns serving Grand Coulee Dam, originally built to house dam construction workers.  The town of Coulee Dam lies downstream below the dam, the towns of Grand Coulee and Electric City lie above the dam.
