The Spokane River and Riverfront Park in
downtown Spokane.
Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane covers more than 100 acres and features flower-bedecked paths, rides, spacious lawns, park benches, a variety of public art and various venues including the the Spokane Opera House and an IMAX Theater.
The park had its origins as the site for Expo '74, the city's World's Fair, and subsequently was preserved as a landmark park popular with local citizens as well as out-of-town visitors.
The
Spokane River, the center-piece of the park, has its origins in Coeur d'Alene
Lake in North Idaho and empties into the Columbia River north of the town of
Davenport. The river is popular with kayakers and rafters up and down its
length.
Popular park attractions include the Pavilion, an amusement park; the hand-carved 1909 Looff Carousel; the giant Radio Flyer wagon that doubles as a slide; the gondola ride over the Spokane River; and the various works of public art highlighted by The Joy of Running Together, a throng of life-size runners sculptured in steel by artist David Govedare that are seen racing down one of the park's sidewalks.
Steel sculpture "The Joy of Running" by David
Govedare.
