Changed from Ship Harbor to Anacortes in 1876 by
Amos Bowman, who gave it a Spanish-sounding version of his wife's maiden name, Anna

Fidalgo Island
Take the time to walk
across the steel bridge which arches gracefully across the narrow gorge separating Whidbey
and Fidalgo Islands. Look down upon the treacherous waters of the channel named
Deception Pass by Captain George Vancouver, in commemoration of his initial mistaken
belief that the Pass was a narrow bay and he had charted part of the Whidbey
"peninsula", rather than an island. Hiking trails overlooking the gorge
are to be found in the tiny state park which occupies the rocky, forested headlands on
either side of the Pass.
