Getting to Lopez Island

A pleasant 45-minute ferry ride links Lopez Island to the city of Anacortes in northwest Washington. Visitors can also reach the island by scheduled flights from Seattle or by chartered planes from various Northwest cities.

Activities Abound On Lopez Island

A predominately rural island of rolling hills and flat pastureland, Lopez Island is a great place for bicyclists and for travelers seeking a quiet retreat from the bustle of the mainland. Visitors can immerse themselves in the many activities along the seashore, or take time to enjoy the bakeries, shops and galleries that dot the island. Visitors also can take advantage of local kayaking and boat tours, or rent a kayak for a private tour of the island’s coastal waters.

Lopez Island Offers Many Attractions

Lopez Island is home to several natural attractions, including the 138-acre Spencer Spit State Park, a favorite site for clamming and crabbing. Shark Reef Sanctuary has 45 acres of day trails along old growth woods and scenic coastal vistas. A variety of birds and wildlife can be observed on the island from its several parks. A farmer’s market is held twice a week during the summer. Lopez Island Vineyards, the San Juan’s only winery, sells organically-produced wines and is open for scheduled wine tastings.

Accommodations are spread across the island and include several inns and private cabins for rent.

Visiting the other three San Juan Islands by ferry from Lopez is easy, and can be an enjoyable way to see the distinctive communities of the San Juan Islands.
