Despite traffic congestion, pedestrians and drivers tend to obey the road rules with a minimum of fuss. Pedestrians have right of way on street corners, whether it's a marked crosswalk or not. You might notice there is not much jaywalking. This is perhaps because it is actively policed, and also more difficult as cars are permitted to turn right on a red light. Drivers who want to do like the locals will not push in at ferry lines or misuse the car pool lanes.

City streets are on a quasi-grid system, as best as could be squeezed onto the odd-shaped land area. Streets run east-west and avenues run north-south. The avenue numbering system begins at the waterfront and ends near the Cascade Mountains. The changeover from named to numbered streets is at the Lake Washington Ship Canal.

Metro Online is the web site for Metro Transit, a division of the King County Department of Transportation. Provides information on bus schedules, traffic conditions, and other travel information. An underground bus tunnel operates through downtown Seattle from the Chinatown District to the Convention Center. The downtown area is a free ride zone.
