The refuge provides a habitat of 23,000 acres in the famous Channeled Scablands of the Columbia River Basin featuring numerous small to medium-sized lakes surrounded by sagebrush and grassy uplands, canyons, and buttes. The refuge is a interring area for an average population of more than 100,000 ducks (mostly mallards) and Canada geese. Some mallards, redheads, and cinnamon teal nest on the refuge along with various song, water, marsh, and shorebirds, and many hawks and owls. View birds by canoeing through the network of lakes, or from the interpretive foot trails, or the scenic auto tour.
