Aberdeen, Washington: A Harbor City
Aberdeen lies at the confluence of the Chehalis and Wishkah rivers, inside Grays Harbor on the southwest coast of Washington. Flanked on either side by lumber mill towns, Aberdeen is the largest city in Gray's Harbor County.
Home to the replica tall ships "Lady Washington," and "Hawaiian Chieftain," Aberdeen garnered a fair amount of attention in the early 1990s during Washington state's centennial celebrations. The Lady Washington, which is a replica of a ship commanded by the 18th-century explorer Captain Robert Gray, has been dubbed "Washington State's Tall Ship Ambassador." Both ships are open to tours and demonstrations when they are docked at the Gray's Harbor Historical Seaport, in Aberdeen.
Attractions Abound in Aberdeen
Fans of the former "grunge" musician, Kurt Cobain, can take a walking tour of Cobain's former residences and haunts. Cobain was born in Aberdeen and was propelled to stardom in the late 1980s with his creation of the alternative rock band, Nirvana.
Other attractions in Aberdeen include the Aberdeen Museum, which showcases exhibits of 19th and 20th-century artifacts, and the Aberdeen Timberland Library. First opened in 1890, the library moved into its current location with the construction of a Carnegie building in 1908. The historical building was replaced with the current library building in 1966 and then renovated and expanded in 2000. The library, open six days a week (closed Sundays) is part of Timberland's five-county regional library system.
Outdoor Recreation Activities of Aberdeen
Gray's Harbor is flanked by several state parks that overlook the Pacific Ocean and offer camping, beachcombing, wooded trails and wildlife viewing. Ocean City State Park, at the north end of the harbor features interpretive activities during the summer. Grayland Beach, approximately 7 miles south of the town of Westport, is known for its spectacular oceanfront and beachcombing opportunities.
