Kellogg,
Idaho,
situated on busy Interstate 90 approximately 50 minutes from
Coeur d'Alene,
was reportedly founded in 1885 by a prospector and his burro. Although
history credits the gold miner with the foresight that led to the
establishment of the old mining camp, Kellogg residents half-heartedly point
out that it was the burro - not the man - who found the lucrative
outcropping of ore on the mountainside. Although Kellogg's mines were closed
in 1981, the city of 2,400 remains as a testament to Idaho's significant
mining history.
Kellogg's quirky past is also regaled with the annual Jackass Days, a
celebration of snow, skiing and winter fun that takes place in early
January. Finding a reason to celebrate Kellogg's winter weather, however,
isn't hard, as the town is located near several popular ski areas. It is
also at the base of the famed Bitterroot Range, which is revered for its
alpine and heli-skiing opportunities. Nordic skiing can be found in the
nearby Coeur d'Alene National Forest and in the Bitterroot Range on the
Idaho-Montana border.
The Idaho Panhandle (North and
North Central Travel Regions) is also a favorite destination for fair-weather
vacations. Alpine lakes are stocked with rainbow trout and northern pike,
although other warm-water species, such as smallmouth bass and crappie can
also be found in nearby lakes. Chinook salmon and lake trout are also
regional to the Idaho Panhandle.
Kellogg's mining and rail history is highlighted in several local museums,
including the Northern Pacific Railroad Museum and the Wallace Mining
Museum. Both are located in the nearby town of
Wallace.
