Wallowa Lake, Oregon

The waters of Wallowa Lake fill an elongated bowl-like depression that was formed by a tongue of glacier ice flowing from the Wallowa Mountains in the background. As the glacier ice moved out into the valley floor, it left piles or rock debris along its edges called moraines. These moraines are seen today as high ridges forming the walls of the depression left by the melting glacier ice and are said to be the best examples of ancient moraines found anywhere in North America.
