Cascade Mountains Travel Region

Morton, Washington

Morton, WA is a historic logging town with a permanent population of less than 2,000 people. It houses Morton General Hospital, the 24 hour emergency room for all the local communities that serve tourists headed for Mt Rainier, Mt St Helens, the White Pass Ski Area for snow boarding and snow skiing, and dozens more attractions along the White Pass Scenic Byway. At elevation 940 feet, Morton stradles the intersection of US-12 and SR 7. It is a 31 miles drive east off exit 68 from I-5.

Tucked into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest yet on a major highway, Morton has all the amenities travelers want including first run movies, high speed Internet, bowling, mini golf, roller skating, grocery stores, banks, restaurants, motels, camp grounds, a laundromat and a small craft airport (39P) in addition to the hospital. Many travelers stay in Morton and use it as a portal for camping and hiking in the National Forests, or for elk hunting and deer hunting.

Morton puts on a logger's jubilee Friday, Saturday and Sunday the second weekend of every August. There is a logging equipment parade, logging and lumberjacking skill contests for cash prizes, a 10k run, silly events like bed races, and the coronation of the jubilee queen. For more information, call 360-496-6362.

Lawnmower races are a highlight of the Morton Logger's Jubilee. They run 5 mowers at a time in an arena on the grass, made out of hay bales. Crowds in bleachers cheer, hoot and holler. There are all different classes of mower races, from powder puff for the ladies to races for teens and men. The races start in daylight and go on well after dark.

Morton has a motorcross track where riders can test out their dirt bikes on the muddy turns and hills. Hangliders enjoy soaring off Dog Mountain and descending to the green hills below with a view of the snowy mountains above.

Christmas in the Mountains is an event held the first Saturday of each December in Morton. Participants go on hayrides, go caroling, see a free Christmas movie at the local Roxy Theater, enjoy a living nativity scene and go to a silent Christmas tree auction.
