Sultan, Washington

History of Sultan

Sultan, once a logging and mining town was named after Tsul-Tad or Tseul-tud, a local Indian Chief of a Snohomish sub tribe living on the Skykomish River in the late 1870's. The local miners Americanized the chief's name to Sultan.

Outdoor Recreation in Sultan

At present time, Sultan is popular for river rafting, hiking and fishing due to it's location at the confluence of the Sultan and Skykomish Rivers. Sultan's nearness to Spada Lake Reservoir also provides more salmon and steelhead fishing opportunities. Another popular event in July is the Sultan Shindig. This annual three day event includes a logging competition, carnival rides, street vendors, food and entertainment.
