Manzanita, Oregon is situated approximately fifty minutes south of the port town of Astoria on Oregon's scenic North Coast. Winding, picturesque streets skirt the coastline and provide an attractive, quaint setting for a quiet weekend retreat or summer getaway. Less than two hours west of Portland, Manzanita is a popular vacation destination for travelers and repeat visitors.
Manzanita caters to travelers and residents who like a quiet, undisturbed setting. In fact, its greatest appeal is its lack of box department stores and noisy streets. Selective gift shops and other small stores can be found on or around Laneda Street, the town's center. For those who desire a larger selection of grocery stores and amenities, the city of Tillamook lies approximately 25 miles south of Manzanita, on the southern edge of Tillamook Bay.
Small, well maintained motels and vacation rentals can be found on Manzanita's main thoroughfare, within walking distance from pristine beaches. Several small, intimate cafes and restaurants are clustered around its downtown sector.
Manzanita has a small but thriving art center that caters to the town's vibrant arts community. Summer attractions range from theater to celebrity musical performances. Nearby Nehalem is a magnet for bluegrass performances during its annual Bluegrass at the Beach workshops.
Manzanita's most popular ecological attraction is the nearby Nehalem State Park (south of the town, on U.S. Highway 101), which is known for its 900 acres of forest trails and scenic vistas. Camping, horseback riding, beachcombing, crabbing and fishing are a few of the park's popular activities. The park is ADA-equipped.
Oswald West State Park, north of Manzanita, is also a favorite destination for wildlife viewing, tide pool-combing and surfing. A glimpse southward from Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain (above) provides a breathtaking view of Manzanita Beach and distant shorelines.
