Concrete, Washington

Concrete, a small town of approximately 700 people, is located in Skagit County. The site of a lime quarry and the Portland Cement Company, this town was once named Cement City. After the Portland Cement Company plant was built in Baker, the two cities, Baker and Cement City merged and the new community settled on the name "Concrete".

Imagine listening to Orson Welles' famous radio broadcast, the War of the Worlds, when suddenly all electricity is lost plunging the town into darkness and the phone lines not working either. The last words heard were the Martians invading towns and the countryside with flashes of light and poisonous gases. Well, that really happened in Concrete. The power outage, that is. It's safe to say that some of the most terrified listeners were in Concrete. Remember, this broadcast was presented as a series of "news bulletins" which had many people convinced that indeed there was an actual alien invasion in progress.

For those who enjoy history, Concrete has many original buildings to explore. To find out more please see our page on attractions.
