One
of the most popular attractions for San Juan Island, from late spring to
early fall, is whale watching.
The majestic Orca Whales can be seen from
land or by watercraft. Many visitors to San Juan Island choose local
outfitters and charters out of Friday Harbor to help plan their whale
watching adventure. Another excellent option for whale watching is the
36-acre day-use Washington State park, Lime Kiln Park, also known as
Whale Watch Park. Get connected to whale watching guides and outfitters
descriptions and contact information through our Activities link in the
left column. While whale watching draws many visitors to San Juan Island
each year, the island has many other attractions.
The pastoral nature of San Juan Island promises rest and relaxation away from the work-a-day world. Attractions on San Juan are numerous and include the Westcott Bay Reserve Sculpture Park, open dawn to dusk, with its 19 acres of outdoor sculptures; the Pelindaba Lavender Farm, which manufactures fragrant lavender products and essential oils; the Whale Museum, which includes interpretive and educational displays about San Juan's oldest migratory residents; and San Juan Vineyards, the island's award-winning winery.
History buffs will enjoy the San Juan Island National Historical Park, which features the original sites of the 19th century American and English camps and several interpretive displays. Guided and self-guided tours are available for both locations. Visit the National Park Service website to plan your next visit.
Picturesque Friday Harbor is a great place to stroll on foot. Gift shops, galleries and a wide-ranging selection of seaside restaurants and cafes offer a relaxing way to spend an afternoon or a weekend.
