Casper, Wyoming

Casper, at an elevation of 5,222 feet, sits at the foot of Casper mountain in central Wyoming's Laramie Range.

Established in 1888, Casper's early years were violent ones; its first mayor was killed by his business partner in a shootout on Main Street.

The establishment of a railhead at the town insured its survival into modern times. The area was also the site of several ferries that carried California and Oregon bound immigrants across the North Platte River in the mid 19th Century.

Modern Casper, with 54,000 residents, features a variety of outdoor activities including five Golf courses, Kayaking on the North Platte River through downtown as well as Fly Fishing, Big Game Hunting, Hiking, Biking, Rock Climbing, Nordic and Alpine skiing as well as Snowmobiling and Camping on Casper Mountain. Water sport and sailing activities are within easy reach on Alcova or Pathfinder Reservoirs.

Cultural and Historic Attractions include 20 Museums and the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center. The Painted Past Tour walks visitors through downtown by candlelight while costume clad actors relive the early, rowdy years of Casper's history.

Numerous Community Theatre Groups, a Symphony, eclectic Dining, Nightclubbing and Summer Outdoor Festivals help make Casper a unique destination.
