Westport, on the south end of Grays Harbor just two hours from Seattle, is likely Washington's best kept coastal secret. Historically famous for its fishing charters, Westport hit hard times in the 80's and 90's as it struggled with ever-stringent evolving fishing regulations.
The town has recovered and has been evolving into a classic northwest beach destination, complete with a charter fleet of 30 boats (compared to the 300 that once operated out of the Westport Marina) and a thriving commercial fishing industry.
Local activities for visitors vary throughout the year, but beachcombing the sandy beaches is popular all year round - whether to storm watch during the winter months or wade in the shore break during the summer. Westport is home to the most popular surfing beaches north of California, as well as 2 surf shops which provide equipment rentals and lessons.
Seasonal fishing, crabbing, and clamming can be done off the fisherman's boardwalk in the Marina or through a local charter. Festivals are popular during summers, from the World Famous Crab Races in April to Rusty Scuppers Pirate Daze in June and the Westport Art Festival in August. Attractions include paddle boat rentals, the local Maritime Museum, and Washington's tallest lighthouse.
The dining scene in Westport, once limited to fish and chips and chowder, has progressed to include fine dining, high end wine lists, sushi, and even an east coast style deli. Lodging is also available for everyone from campers to those seeking luxury accommodations on the beach.
