Location
Grand Coulee Dam is located about where the basaltic
Columbia
to the south and west
meets the Okanogan Highlands to the north and east. Hence, granite and not
basalt is what you see in the immediate area. Franklin D Roosevelt Lake,
the water that builds up behind the dam, extends to the northeast.
Nearby Communities
There are three towns serving Grand Coulee Dam, originally built to house
dam construction workers. The town of Coulee Dam lies downstream below the
dam, the towns of Grand Coulee and Electric City lie above the dam.

Located off Highway 155 at the base of the dam in Coulee City, the visitor center is open daily (except New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and offers extended hours between Memorial Day and September 29. The center is fully accessible and features hands-on exhibits, an auditorium, Laser Light Show in the summer and restrooms.
