Cannon Beach's famous attraction. This mammoth basalt formation rises 235 feet above the shore and is the third largest monolith in the world. When the tide rescinds an amazing view of the sea life and tidal pools are exposed.

Located on the Oregon Coast at Cannon Beach, Hay Stack Rock is only 1.5 hours' drive from the city of Portland, OR. Hay Stack rock is a seashore monolith rock formation, also known as a sea stack. Accessible by foot at low tide, Hay Stack rock is an intertidal Hay Stack rock looms off shore, standing at 235 feet, or 72 meters tall at low tide. Hay Stack Rock is the third largest intertidal structure in the world.

When the tide rescinds an amazing view of the sea life and tidal pools are exposed. Filled with sea life, these pools are teeming with life since the organisms within these pools spend a great deal of their lives underwater. Tide pools at Hay Stack Rock include sea anemones, star fish, crabs, sea slugs, limpets, chitons, as well as, ocean vegetation.

Take care as you explore the shore, Hay Stack Rock is protected under the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a seabird nesting colony. It is also protected under the Oregon department of fish and wildlife as a marine garden. Just like any seaside site, you should take caution while visiting since the ocean is unpredictable. Watch out for the waves and changing tides so you don't get stuck or stranded. Take note that no climbing is permitted on Hay Stack Rock since it is home to many protected animals.

Scenic Drives

Pacific Coast Scenic Byway
This wondrous 363 mile/580 km byway follows the entire Oregon coast via Highway 101 allowing one to take in the stunning scenery of the Pacific Ocean. Discover the points of interest such as aquariums and museums. For additional enjoyment, be sure to stop by the charming coastal towns along the way. Allow 10-12 hours for driving time.

35-mile byway off Highway 101 between Tillamook and Pacific City starting at Cape Kiwanda and continuing along Cape Meares and Cape Lookout.

Located 1 mile south of Cannon Beach off the highway, Arcadia State Recreation Site is a wonderful place to spend the day at the beach. Here you can surf, watch tide pools or have a picnic. This beach stretches between 2 headlands, Humbug Point to the north and Lion Rock to the south. Low tide allows you to to pass both headlands.

Part of the Three Capes Scenic Route, this scenic viewpoint features an 1890's Cape Meares lighthouse that you can tour, hiking and walking trails through old growth spruce trees including the "Octopus Tree". Viewing migrating whales is possible in the winter and spring.

Located 2 miles north of Gearhart off Highway 101, Del Rey is a wonderful place to enjoy the ocean, beach and beautiful sunsets.

Ecola Park is located between Seaside and Cannon Beach stretching the coastline for 9 miles. This day use park offers amazing sightseeing opportunities, an abandoned lighthouse, a network of trails that includes a segment of the Oregon Coast Trail and the Clatsop Loop Trail, a historical interpretive trail.

Fort Stevens is chalked full of history. Beginning in the Civil War until the end of World War II, the fort was in service for 84 years. This unique park features a historic shipwreck and of course the historical fort. In the summer an underground tour runs through a rare gun battery that also served as a command center during World War II. Explore a variety of habitats by hiking.

Located 5 miles south of Cannon Beach, Hug Point offers forested picnic areas and a short walk to the beach. Discover a seasonal waterfall, caves carved into sandstone cliffs and tide pools by walking a short distance to the north. Be careful not to get stranded at high tide while exploring the point.

Located off Highway 101 north of Rockaway, Manhattan Beach is a relaxing place for picnic and provides access to the beach.

Nehalem Bay Park is situated between the bay and the ocean on a 4 mile long sand spot. Walk over the sand dunes for your beach activities such as beach combing where you may find shells and agates. Take in the stunning view of the bay via the bike path. This is a pet friendly facility.

Oswald has a secluded sandy beach and miles of hiking trails including 13 miles of the Oregon Coast Trail. Cape Falcon and Neah-kah-nie Mountain are two headlands offering more hikes.

Located 8 miles northeast of Necanicum Junction off Highway 26, Saddle Mountain is a great place where you can discover wildflowers, stunning scenery, a panoramic view from the summit of Saddle Mountain, and the viewpoint on Humbug Mountain.

Sunset Beach has a famous history and offers access to the ocean with a wide range of views from Cape Disappointment to the north and Ecola State Park to the south. There is an ADA accessible boardwalk leading to the beach.
